V RARE EARLY 19C CHINESE MANDARIN PIEN-MIEN SILK & PAINTED FAN W LACQUER FRAME

Description....Welcome to my auction. For your consideration we have here a very rare example of a early 19c Chinese Pien-Mien fan performed in the Mandarin style and produced in China sometime around the early 19c approximately between C1820 to C1840. Very few of these special fans have survived through time due to their fragile nature, climatic changes and poor care, although this particular fan even though has wear it is still a great example of this art form. The fan's frame is made of a light wood with a black lacquer ground with had painted gold gilt decoration on all edges and handle which has a area to the bottom to attach a tassel. The front leaf is made of a hand painted decorated pith paper depicting an outdoor pavilion scene showing painted figures w faces along with silk embroidery to the plans, trees, rockery and other points of interest. The rear of the leaf is covered in paper. I have been collecting and dealing in Chinese antiques for over 30 years and this is the only Pien-Mien fan I have encountered in the Mandarin style and with some restoration this fan would be a very important addition to ones collection.

Condition...Considering how fragile these fans are this particular fan is in very acceptable condition showing some wear to the leaf consisting of 2 faces missing along with some small areas of the silk embroidery and a few short splits to the leaf. The painted background scenes still show nice coloring and the leaf would benefit and would well worth a professional cleaning and restoration where needed. The wood lacquer frame seems to be in overall good condition with the exception of the face frame having a twist which is common due to climatic changes and being of a lightweight wood being used along with the tension from the stretching of the decorated leaf. The gold gilt decoration to the frame mainly has loss of the gold gilt decoration to the handle due to holding the fan with the balance of all the
octagonal
sides still retaining most of the gilting. All in all a extremely rare fan and has been in my collection for many years coming from a local collector in a old estate section of Toledo, Ohio.
